Blog Assignment 6- Native American Treatment and Removal in the 1800s
Over the past unit we have studied and discussed how the United States moved from being a country of 13 states along the Atlantic Coast to a vast area reaching all the way to the Pacific Ocean. We looked at the explorers that traveled the new vast land and finally today we talked about the settlers and pioneers that risked everything to move West. Unfortunately the expansion and settlement was was not positive for everyone. The Native Americans were often moved from their land onto reservations in areas like Oklahoma. Those who resisted were forced by the military and many many died from disease. Read pages 368-369 in your book. It gives an example of this when in 1830 President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act to make the Cherokee Tribe leave Florida. For this blog assignment you need to write at least six sentences summing up what happened to the Cherokee on the pages you read, write how it makes you feel, and then tell me how things could have been done differently.

The Cherokee Indians were forced out of their homes because of the Indian Removal Act. The Cherokee had to walk 800 miles through horrible conditions. One-fourth of the Cherokee Indians died. The trail that they traveled from their homes to Oklahoma was treacherous. Escape was impossible because the Cherokees were guarded so closely. This journey was called the “Trail of Tears.” To me, the treatment of the Indians was unfair because the Indians should have their freedom also. If I were President, I would give them their freedom and choice to become a part of our nation.
ReplyDeleteThe congress of the United States passed in act whitch was called the Indian Removal Act.Some americans were agianst the Indian Removal Act but it still was passed. After the Act was passed the Western pushed the Cherokees out of there homes. So the Cherokees packed up there stuff and moved out. Then they went to Oklahoma. When the Cherokees got to Oklahoma it was the winter time. So when they got to Oklahoma they found out that 4000 of the Cherokees were died. The route thay traveled was called the Trial or Tears. I think this is called the Trail of death for the Cherokees. I also think this was unfare for the Cherokees because they can have freedom too.

In 1830 President Andrew Jackson signed an removing all Indians from the West and placing them in a special territory. The indians got the supreme court to agree with them. However, Jackson would still no agree.Instead of acting justly, as the Cherokee hoped, President Martin Van Buren was elected in 1836 and took Jackson's side of view.He actually inforced it and sent soldiers to remove the Cherokee out of the West to where Oklahoma is now. The remaining Indians had to travel through harsh weather about 800 miles with soldiers surrounding them on the Trail of Tears to where the new Indian Territory was. On there way about one out of four Indians died. If I could change this I would let the indians keep 85% of their land or more if they agreed, I also would tell the settlers to back off it was the Indians land. I would also would have made an Indian Territory, but I would make it in California not really far away.

When settlers were starting to move to the new land the Cherokees were forced to move to Indian territory. THis was in 1830 when President Jackson was president. President Jackson signed a law called the In dian Removal Act. In 1838 Van Buren sent the US army to make the CHerokees move. It was impossible to escape. Lots of the Cherokees died on the trip. THat is why the trail they walked on is the Trail of Tears. Also it was where probably alot of the Indians were in tears. I think this is unfair what the US did. Everyone (no matter what culture) should be allowed to live where they want. Besides the Cherokees were in the land before the settlers came!

The Cherokee Indians lived throughout the southwestern United States. More and more settlers were coming to America and more and more settlers were needing land. Soon the government had to open up the Indian land. This forced the Indians to move. In 1830, President Jackson signed an Indian removal contract forcing the Indians to move to an Indian territory. This was much smaller than their other lands and there were more Indian tribes on it. One chief tried to protest, but the president said no. In 1836, Martin Van Buren was elected and gave the Indians a new hope, but he agreed with Jackson and made the Indians who had not obeyed orders move to the territory. If I could change anything this is what it would be: I think that they could have given it a second thought and thought "Self, would I like it if my homelands were taken away me?" (thinking) "No, self, you wouldn't! Hmmmm, maybe we should let them keep their lands. After all, we fought for freedom."

In 1830 President of the U.S.A Andrew Jackson signed a law called the Indian Removal Act. It made the Cherokee Indians move out of there land! They had to go to the Indian Territory. Then, President Martin Van Buren was elected. He agreed with Jackson. Then he made the Indians walk about 800 miles to get to the Indian Territory!!!!!!!!! That was called The Trail of Tears. I don't think that is fair that he made Indians move from there homes!!!!!!! If I was the President I would let the Indians keep their lands.

In 1830 The Indain Removal Act was put in place.This law stated that all indians must leave there land and go to the Indian Territory.When they heard the news they did not want to leave there and they sued the government to keep it. The Supreme Court agreed with them but President Jackson ignored it.The next president Van Buren used the military to make the rest leave. It was an 800 mile trip for the indiands and they had to walk it in bad weather.Thousands of indians died and the journey was called the Trail of Tears. I feel very bad for them.

In 1830 Indian Removal begun. This means that all the indians had to leave and go to the indian territory. When the indians found out they din't like it at all beacuse its there home.Jackson ingnored the fight.Van B. Used the army to get it away. The indians had to leave and walk 800 miles and got sick and died. :(
